Contrary to Recent Rumors, People Are Spending More Time in Social Media Apps

Whether you believe social media apps are the best thing since sliced bread or think they’ll be the main cause of human demise, social media apps are here to stay and the time people spend on them is growing. Contrary to recent rumors, mobile users around the world are spending increasingly more time on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter. Let’s take a quick look at the apps’ user engagement data in the past year, based on 7Park Data’s multi-million global user panel.

In our year-over-year analysis, weekly minutes per active Snapchat user grew 34.4% in Q1 2016 globally. Facebook’s engagement grew by 26.3%, followed by Instagram’s 10.6% and Twitter’s 5.6% growth for the same time period. The chart below shows average weekly minutes spent in each app from January through March 2015 compared to the same period in 2016.

Our data also shows that for some social media apps user engagement is growing faster outside the United States. While Snapchat’s weekly minutes per active user grew 18.4% in the US in Q1 2016 compared to Q1 2015, the app’s EU users increased their in-app time by 40% and users in Asia by 38.8%.

Despite a gob of apps competing for users’ time and attention, Facebook, the veteran social media giant, shows no signs of losing quality time with its users. In the past year, Facebook’s weekly minutes per active user have been on a steady growth path in different countries around the world. Below is a snapshot showing Facebook’s growth from May 2015 to May 2016 in eight countries.

“People have been announcing the death of the Facebook fad since a few months after it started, with no luck yet,” says Byrne Hobart, Lead Internet Analyst at 7Park Data. “While it’s always possible to find a negative datapoint, we see broad strength in the core Facebook app, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp.”
